Google names brands it does not rank

38.6% of the brands Google names in its AI Overview are absent from the results below it.

27 Aug 2026

The assumption underneath most SEO advice about AI Overviews is that Google draws its answer from the pages it already ranks. Rank well, the reasoning goes, and the rest follows.

On our corpus it does not. In week 2026-W36, 38.6% of the brands named inside an AI Overview belonged to domains that were not in the organic results for that query. An overview names 2.1 brands on average, so most overviews contain at least one name you could not have found by reading the results page.

Why naming, not linking

A study across 75,000 brands puts the correlation between brand mentions and AI Overview inclusion at 0.66. For backlinks it is 0.22. That is a large gap, and it points somewhere uncomfortable for anyone whose whole programme is links: the thing that gets you into the answer looks more like being talked about than being linked to.

Which is convenient, because being named is measurable from the outside. Run the query, read the overview, check whether your brand is in it. That is all this site does, once a week, on a fixed list.

How to check your own

Every domain we measure has a page showing both numbers side by side: how often it ranks, and how often Google names it. Start at the domain index. If your domain is not there, it did not clear the publication threshold, which is itself an answer.

The full breakdown is on the report, and the brands Google reaches for most often are on this one.
